“The Warriors” is a classic. It’s one the most entertaining movies involving gangs ever made. Part of the genius of this visually striking movie is that it exploited the need for gangs to distinguish themselves from each other and establish a hierarchy. And how would you do that in a huge city where you’re one of a few hundred gangs? Why, through your style of course! Here we’ll take a look at the good, the bad and the ugly styles from the Warriors. Can you dig it!?
The Hi-Hats definitely have the best name of any gang in this movie. Rocking a decidedly old school knickerbocker look, the Hi-Hats wear top hats, suspenders and old school rugby jerseys. They could have been in the movie “Gangs of New York” if they lost the eye make-up.
Call me crazy but I think Bruno Mars draws significant inspiration from the Harlem Boppers. They make wearing a fedora looked so easy.
Don’t let the overalls fool you, the punks are bruisers. They know the power of momentum with their knives, bats and rollerskates. They may look like they should be hosting some sort of kid’s tv show but the punks would rather fight people in bathrooms. Seriously, who thought it would be a great idea to brawl on roller-skates?!
While the Lizzies are literally dressed to kill, they seemed to have keep the fashion that girls had during the 70s in New York. Then they devoted the money and time they saved into outfitting a stupendous apartment. But several of the Lizzies rock tie dye shirts which is an odd touch.
Though it’s New York in the late seventies, Chinatown wasn’t a huge walled off kingdom closed to outside styles. The Warriors took some significant and silly artistic license in making the token Chinese gang. Note the hats and the vaguely Maoist uniform that they all wear. It makes me wonder about their 5-year plan.
And who can forget the Baseball Furies who stalk Riverside Park! Famous for their face makeup and the love of America’s game, the baseball furies remind us of baseball’s lasting contribution to american style. The Pinstripe suit, the baseball hat (of course), and the varsity jacket have their roots in the great game of baseball.
And then of course there is the Warriors themselves wearing a decidedly American style. The Warriors all wear leather vests, black pants, giant belt buckles, Chuck Taylors and various subtle Native American accoutrements. They’re basically a synthesis of cowboys and indians but they’ve got to get back to Coney Island?!
I think the vests are cool, but they might need something to cover their chests, like the t shirt from Big Trouble in Little China
We hope that you enjoyed this article We’ve got a great collection of Warriors shirts. You’ll find that they’re good… really good.
There should have been a caddy gang, they could wear our Bushwood hat and our Caddyshack t shirt.
